UEFA Euro 2008 Quarter-finals: Germany vs. Portugal result 3-2

The first quarter-final of the UEFA EURO 2008, tool place at St. Jakob-Park in Basel today between Portugal winners of their group and Group B runners-up Germany.

Germany played in their traditional white shirts while Portugal played in red. The match started, and neither side were making their intentions clear in the early stages, then Germany seemed to have settled the better as there seemed some uncertainty in the Portuguese defence.

At the 22nd minute, and only two minutes after Portugal missed a serious opportunity with Moutinho, Schweinsteiger opened the score for Germany.

Not more than 24 minutes later Klose, unmarked, added a goal for Germany with the head after he received the ball from Schweinsteiger on a free kick.

While the first half was going to it's end, Nuno Gomes scored a goal for Portugal to reduce the deficit to only one goal. The first period ended on the score of 2-1 for Germany who settled the better and got a serious advance after two quick goals.

In the second half, Ballack scored a third goal for his team on a header.

At the end of the match, and while Portugal appeared to have accepted their defeat as German defence was repelling all the balls, and while everything seemed lost for them, Postiga scored a second goal to put his team one goal down.

Portuguese team tried to pour forward and press to get the equalizer, but the match ended on the same score, and Germany is progress to the semi-finals after defeating Portugal 3-2.
