Rome Quarter finals : williams sisters out, Sharapova advances

Serbian Jelena Jankovic went through to the semi-finals of Rome tournament by defeating Venus Williams (5-7, 6-2, 6-3) Friday, a few hours after Serena, the other Williams, abandoned because of problems with her back.

In semi-finals today, Jankovic, world number four, will play against the new number one since the retirement of Justine Henin, Maria Sharapova.

Late in the evening, the Russian has battled nearly 2:45 to overcome Patty Schnyder, 6-7 (3 / 7), 7-5, 6-2. The two women have delivered one of the best matches since the beginning of the tournament.

Sharapova declared after the match that she has to make fewer mistakes, but the most important thing is that she plays and wins.

The Serbian, just after a first set which lasted over an hour and won 7-5 by Venus Williams, started playing more aggressively and hit powerful balls on her first service which made the difference in the 2nd and 3rd rounds.

The American has tried to come back in the game, leading 2 to 0 at the beginning of the 3rd set, but at that time she started to seem tired, a problem that has been immediately exploited by her opponent.

The other semi-final will oppose the French Alize Cornet, who has qualified without playing after Serena Williams, abandoned because of a back injury, and the Russian Anna Chakvetadze.
