25% of American girls infected with a sexually transmitted disease
A quarter of American girls are suffering from at least one sexually transmitted disease (STD), said a study by the American Center for Disease Control (CDC), published Tuesday.
According to the study, about 3.2 million girls between 14 and 19 years, 26% of the total number, have papillomavirus (HPV), chlamydia, genital herpes or trichomoniasis, the number would be higher if diseases such as AIDS, syphilis and gonorrhea are included.
The STDs infection is particularly high among black American girls, almost half of them are infected by at least one sexual disease, compared with 20% for white girls with Mexican origin.
In the United States, the costs spent on STD treatment amount to about $ 15 billion, according to the CDC, whose study was carried out between 2003 and 2004, with the participation of 838 girls.
Half of the girls reported having sexual intercourse, and 40% of them had an STD.
