The UN Special Envoy meets Aung San Suu Kyi
The UN Special Envoy for political reconciliation in Burma met with the opponent Aung San Suu Syi and other dissidents Saturday, after unsuccessful talks with the military in power.
The leader of the National League for Democracy (NLD), who has spent 12 of 18 years under arrest, had been taken by car from her residence, to where lived Ibrahim Gambari.
The representative of the general secretary of the UN Ban Ki-moon had earlier talks with representatives of ethnic groups, non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and several political parties, including five senior NLD.
The party leaders of Mrs. Suu Kyi have reaffirmed their commitment to accelerate dialogue with the junta and to obtain the release of political prisoners, according to one of them. Mr. Gambari allegedly advised them to seize any opprtunity given by the junta.
